Omaha Day Trip

After getting back from our Bataan Recreational March on the Katy Trail we also wanted to do something, admittedly brief, with the kids. So we did a quick day trip up to Omaha

This blog is going to be quick, I'm not going to even attempt to be entertaining...I'm just chucking the pictures in to remember, basically. One thing to note though...Debra asked me what the weather would be like, I looked at the app and said "pretty warm". In northern Missouri as the temps were dropping quite substantially, she asked "did you look at the weather in -Omaha-???". So, as my stupid tax, we had to stop at a Walmart and buy warm clothes for Debra and the kids. First stop, SAC Museum where my annual pass was running out. The Bone (B-1b) out front.

ICBMs out front. Technically the Thor on the right is an IRBM.

Peter kept trying to get out of the shot when I was trying to take the shot with him in it, thinking I wanted it without him in it. Was comically annoying. SR-71 in "right about to crash EJECT EJECT" pose.

Dragon Lady up top and Flying Fortress below.

Recon version of the Phantom.

FB-111 (maybe RB-111) business end.

MiG-23 tail, Cyrillic says something like ostorozhno sot, where the first word means caution, the second one maybe means "hundred" but obviously not a direct transaction.

B-58 Hustler.

Don't remember what plane this engine is for but the mechanical complexity of a jet engine is insane.

The Fifty-Two.

Relatively small Canberra cockpit.

Relatively MASSIVE B-36, six turnin' and four burnin' as the saying goes.

Pete pulling himself through a mockup B-36 cabin tube...that was bigger than the one in the actual plane it should be said.

B-25 Mitchell.

This one seems new...Predator drone.

Douglas A-26 Invader with eight .50cals.

Pete and I did the flight sim, and Pete took guns and I took the flight controls. Lots of fun and we shot down 2 or 3 planes.

B-29 in the other hangar. We moved kind of quick since this was just a day trip.

F-117 Nighthawk, stil in its stripped format...hopefully they'll get it done up in non-classified black paint soon.

DC-3 (one of which me and the Boy had shot down in the simulator)

Lunch in the cafe...I went with the loss leader as usual, which was chili for like $3.

SR-71 camera system.

We hit the gift shop (alas no red REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT t-shirt), then off to the zoo. Was rainy outside.

The kids got hoodies at the zoo gift shop.

I double-taked in this pic because Pete has a doppelganger in it next to Gretchen.

Micro-deer

Ducks (see I'm getting a bit more brief)

Lizardy guy

Other lizardy guy

Bird is tired of your BS

Kookaburra and something that looks like a muppet animal behind it

Lizardy Guy Number Three

Kids were entertained! We were listening to a Cormoran Strike audiobook with a shared set of wireless ear buds.

That isn't real.

Now this is just an absurd bird

Kids taking lots of pictures, probably better than mine.

Young chimpanzee putting on a show by the glass.

Big silverback.

He seemed to single out Peter in the crowd.

The gorilla section was new and quite varied. Overhead tunnel with windows.

Yeah, I've had those days too buddy.

See previous caption.

Fella sitting on top of a viewing bubble.

Sea lions and seals (also a newer section).

Weird but curious bird.

Dark section in the Madagascar building. We did not find the eye-eye (sic?).

Maybe I was getting slaphappy but I tested out ChatGPT using this as a prompt.

Impressive. Awful at the same time, but so would my attempt have been, and it would take a lot longer.

Fossa.

Pete did something to piss off this goose.

We almost came to fisticuffs.

Koi/carp fish

Elephants coming over to get fed.

And the giraffe section.

That was about it, we drove home in the afternoon.
