We did visit the Sand Dunes and I too thought this huge pile of sand was odd. I don't recall mosquitoes! Love CO Springs; I think of it as cozier than Denver. We used to try to do things slower, and stay longer in places, but the kids bounced (rather noisily) off the hotel room walls which imparted great deals of parental stress as we tried to keep them quiet, so we eventually ended up going for a more aggressively paced vacation to match our kids', if not our own, stamina...<br /><br />And Pete did pretty well on the island, except for the first big ascent in the (hot) valley. More impressive to me was his demeanor on the first hike up Lily Mountain. He was leading the charge most of the way, 1200 feet up and several miles. Took it out of the rest of us.
